Vaccinations are vital to the health and protection of your pet and serve as a preventive measure to combating viral diseases like Parvovirus, Parainfluenza virus, Distemper, Leptospirosis, Panleukopenia, Feline Leukemia Virus and Rabies. Vaccinations are accompanied by a veterinarian consultation and examination to make certain that your pet’s condition is stable enough to receive them.
Vaccinations help to combat diseases by exposing the pet’s immune system to inactive or small amount of a particular form of bacteria or virus. Our doctors will help you decide which vaccines are appropriate for your pet’s risk factors. Proper and timely administration is paramount to ensure for optimal protection. Vaccinations are particularly important to young animals that have immature immune systems. Vaccinations generally begin at 6-8 weeks of age and are given every three to four weeks until the series is completed.
Dogs and Pups:
Vaccinating puppies is crucial for their health and well-being. In Maharashtra, as in the rest of India, a standard vaccination schedule is followed to protect puppies from various diseases.
The core vaccinations recommended for puppies are as follows:
- Puppy DP Vaccine: Administered at 6-8 weeks of age to protect against canine distemper and parvovirus.
- DHPPiL Vaccine (7-in-1): Given every 2-4 weeks until 20 weeks old, this vaccine protects against distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and leptospirosis.
- Rabies Vaccine: Administered by 90 days of age with annual boosters required.
The non-core vaccinevas include the Kennel Cough vaccine and the Canine Corona Virus vaccine.
Cats and Kittens:
In Maharashtra, the recommended vaccination schedule for cats includes:
- 60 Days: First dose of CRP vaccine (protects against Feline Calicivirus, Rhinotracheitis Virus, and Panleukopenia Virus).
- 90 Days: Second dose of CRP and first dose of Anti-Rabies vaccine.
- 120 Days: Third dose of CRP and second dose of Anti-Rabies vaccine.
Details of these vaccines are as follows:
- CRP Vaccine: This vaccine protects against Feline Calicivirus, Rhinotracheitis Virus, and Panleukopenia Virus. It is a modified live vaccine that helps reduce clinical signs and virus excretion caused by these infections[1][2][3]. The immunity duration varies, with annual boosters recommended.
- Anti-Rabies Vaccine: Rabies is a fatal disease that can spread to humans. The vaccine is typically administered at 90 days of age and requires annual boosters to maintain immunity.
Adult cats should receive annual boosters for both CRP and Anti-Rabies vaccines. It’s essential to consult a veterinarian for personalized advice based on the cat’s health and lifestyle.
